My Background
I have extensive experience treating individuals struggling with all types of addiction, as well as other commonly co-occurring disorders, such as depression, bipolar, anxiety, and insomnia. My clinical experience ranges from directing addiction treatment programs in men’s correctional facilities in eastern Massachusetts to individual therapy. In my private practice, I focus primarily on men’s issues in recovery, especially those related to finding meaning, purpose, and identity.
I have a very comprehensive understanding of the ways in which science, medicine, and spirituality intersect at the problem of addiction. Both my Ph.D. (Boston University School of Medicine) and my postdoctoral training (Yale School of Medicine) focused on the neuroscience of addiction and recovery. I have graduate degrees in science and religion (Boston University)a and theology (Samford University), and I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology/philosophy (University of Alabama at Birmingham).
